Paraseptal or distal acinar emphysema
In this type of emphysema involves distal part of acinus. Distal acinar emphysema is localised along with the pleura and perilobular septa. Involvement is seen adjacent to the areas of fibrosis (thickening and scaring of connective tissue due to injry) and atelectasis (partial or complete collapse of the lungs) and involves upper part of the lungs is more severely than the lower. This type is seldom associated with COPD but is the common cause of spontaneous pneumothorax in young adult.
Grossly: The subpleural portion of the lung shows air filled cysts (0.5 to 2 cm in diameter).
